With 8 Japanese sake breweries bringing 23 different sake and fruit-based liqueurs, not to mention over 800 visitors coming to the event, the Eat-Japan Sake Experience 2016 once again lived up to its reputation as Europe’s largest public sake tasting event. With long lines, spirited conversations, and even heated debate over candidate sake (not to mention numerous sake bottle purchased at the Sake Shop), it is clear that the UK sake market is not only a force to be reckoned with, but also one that enjoys a loyal following and is fueled by deep passion.
Participating visitors, after sampling the different sake and liqueurs, voted for their favourite in separate categories: “People’s Favourite”, “Best sake for sake beginners”, and “Best match with non-Japanese food”. With the votes tallied, the results are in!
Voted the overall favourite and winner of the “People’s Favourite” category was the “Hana-Fuga Yuzu” sparkling sake. This entry comes from the Ozeki Brewery and is a light blend of sparkling sake and yuzu citrus!
In the “Best sake for sake beginners” category, voters chose the “MIO Sparkling Sake“. Entered by the Shirakabegura brewery, this gently sparkling sake showcases the natural sweetness of rice.
And finally, for the sake which would be the “Best match with non-Japanese food” voters selected the “Koimari Saki Junmai Ginjo” sake. Entered by first-time entrant Koimari Brewery, this bold sake carries hints of mango, pineapple, and mandarin orange.
Congratulations to all three winning entrants and their breweries!
