Whatever Happened to all the Ninjas?
FOCUS

There are certain Japanese words that everyone seems to know: samurai, kimono, karaoke, sushi. And ninja. Despite being a secretive band of highly trained agents, about whom little reliable historical source material remains, the ninja have, in modern times, achieved worldwide notoriety, a level of fame that would have made their job – consisting primarily of espionage, sabotage and assassination – extremely difficult at the time. They’ve even got their own (highly addictive) app now

Maybe we even know that ninja is written as 忍者、with the kanji for shinobu 忍, which has implications of stealth and encroachment and clandestineness (all of which are excellent ninja skills) and mono 者, which means person.  But how much do we know about who they were and what became of them?
