What we do at #HJ2020

We will be demonstrating the game and inviting visitors to learn how to play. (Getting started takes five minutes, getting better is a lifelong journey.)

Go is probably the oldest of all known games. It is an abstract strategy game for two players in which the aim is to surround more territory than the opponent. The game was invented in China more than 2,500 years ago and is believed to be the oldest board game continuously played to the present day.

It has been played in its present form in Japan for over eleven centuries.

In the 1920s the Nihon Ki-in was formed. Newspapers began to sponsor tournaments, a professional system was established. There are more than a dozen major tournament, with columns and game analysis every day in the national newspapers. Top players are celebrities.
