Japanese Calligraphy Master

Shuen is a Sheffield based Japanese calligrapher. She attended Tajima Calligraphy School in Koshigaya, Saitama, from the age of 8.

At the age of 23, under the strict teaching of Master Tajima, she obtained her teaching certification at the Bunka Shodo Gakkai. In 2007, under the teaching of her second master, Shunen, she obtained the highest rank of teaching certification and was given the calligrapher name “Shuen” by her master. However, shortly after being given her calligrapher name, Shuen moved to the UK with her family. She has been working on her own calligraphy style since.

In 2019, she obtained the highest grade of “Nana-Dan – 7th Dan” at the Bunka Shodo Gakkai. The following year, she opened the ‘Shodo Raku’ (A relaxing space to enjoy calligraphy) school in Sheffield, and began promoting a graceful and elegant style of calligraphy that combines the artistic and practical qualities of Mr Goseki Nishiwaki, the founder of the Bunka Shodo Gakkai in Tokyo. She wishes to welcome everyone into the fascinating world of Japanese calligraphy, where the artist can express ones inner self through their brush.

She works closely with KOSHU: Akemi Lucas and for HJF2022, she will be teaching calligraphy classes.
