The fantastic Akari Mochizuki, who you may remember as the singer and leader of the Bon Odori dance at the summer HYPER JAPAN, is back this winter creating the atmosphere of Japanese matsuri with her beautiful voice.
Music is central to a traditional Japanese matsuri festivals and we are delighted to have Akari with us once again singing a selection of Japanese enka classics.
Akari Mochizuki, from Iwakuni in Yamaguchi prefecture, has been singing enka (a variety of traditional Japanese music which often takes the form of sentimental ballads) since she was three years old. Her father, who was a great enka fan, influenced and encouraged her to pursue her talent and she is now the only Japanese Blues enka singer in the UK.
Akari studied drama in Cambridge and modern music in London, and started working as a professional singer in 2009. She has performed as an enka and minyo (Japanese folk music) singer for numerous occasions, including WOMAD 2010 and Japan Matsuri 2009, 2010 and 2012 as well as appearing regularly at HYPER JAPAN.
