Note: This page is from a previous year’s HYPER JAPAN Christmas Market event, please see our schedule for an up-to-date list of performances and activities.
Every HYPER JAPAN event brings the best of Japan to the UK, and this laudable trend continues as award-winning anime director Naoyoshi Shiotani and animation producer Rui Kuroki from the internationally renowned studio Production I.G will be appearing at our Christmas Market!
Production I.G are the company behind such anime productions as Ghost in the Shell, Kuroko no Basket, Blood+, Psycho-Pass, the animated sequences from Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Volume 1, and many more, with their work having featured at the prestigious Cannes film festival. They’re particularly known for their work in digital animation, with stunning computer-generated visuals a major part of the aesthetic in many of their works. At HYPER JAPAN, the director and producer behind several of their most recent big hits will be giving talks throughout the course of the event on different aspects of the animation industry in Japan.
Naoyoshi Shiotani has worked on many projects at I.G as an animator, animation director and director, attracting attention doing storyboard work on Blood + before making his directorial debut with the award-winning Tokyo Marble Chocolate, which was produced as part of the commemoration of Production I.G’s 20th anniversary. He’s more recently been the director of both the Psycho-Pass TV series and movie, as well as the movie Blood -C: The Last Dark amongst other projects. Rui Kuroki has been involved as an animation producer many notable I.G titles, including Kuroko no Basket, the recent Ghost in the Shell: ARISE PYROPHORIC CULT as well as the aforementioned Psycho-Pass movie.
Naoyoshi Shiotani will discuss the artistic process behind the creation of an anime work, while Rui Kuroki will focus on his own experience, making it clear what an animation producer’s role in a work entails. Each talk will be illustrated with some candid snapshots of the I.G offices and production studio to give attendees a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get to know the anime industry from the inside out. This marks the first appearance of either guest in the UK, and is an incredibly intimate behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of a world-class Japanese animation studio, an opportunity for fans to hear directly from top-level creators about what goes into the making of the anime features that they know and love. If you attended the packed HYPER THEATRE sessions at our HYPER JAPAN Festival this summer, you’ll have a great idea of what to expect!
