All good things come to an end, and we’re sad to say that this extends to HYPER JAPAN Festival 2017. The three-day event certainly went out on a high, however, with a dazzling array of performances alongside all the usual stalls, activities and other attractions.
One of the perennial highlights of HYPER JAPAN is the COSTest, and this year’s competitive cosplay spectacle was no exception. The quality of entries was higher than ever, and picking a winner was no mean feat. Participants pulled out all the stops to provide the audience with an unforgettable display of creative costuming. Stay tuned to this website for a fuller update in due course!
A more traditional form of Japanese artistry also had our visitors bewitched. Namely, the utsushi-e performed by artistic troupe Minzawa. Their particular form of shadow puppetry may be technologically simple, but it still mesmerizes today. It was a really good example of how HYPER JAPAN aims to bring together the very best that Japanese culture both ancient and modern has to offer.
Getting back up to date, and hot on the heels of her Chiptune masterclass yesterday, TORIENA was entrancing audiences with her electronica produced exclusively on her Game Boy. There was a glimpse of the future, meanwhile, afforded by DJ DOMO, the amazing robot DJ who made his European debut on the HYPER Live stage. In collaboration with KEIZOMachine (HIFANA), DJ DOMO had already wowed the crowds in Japan and the US, and now it was London’s turn to be charmed by the affable android and his skills on the decks.
As always, HYPER JAPAN offered visitors an unmatched array of Japanese food and drink to enjoy, and as well as the street food stalls and sake experience there was the chance to get involved in workshop sessions. Today saw participants create amazing wasabi pizzas courtesy of S&B. A real foodie highlight, however, was the culmination of Kikkoman’s Ultimate HJ Sushi Roll Competition. Three lucky finalists had their sushi suggestions made real by professional sushi chefs, and the even luckier audience got to sample the creations.
They HYPER JAPAN Festival 2017 may be at an end, but there is at least one reason to be cheerful; the dates for the HYPER JAPAN Christmas Event have been confirmed as 24-26 November! You can already buy your tickets here! https://hyperjapan.co.uk/christmas/
