Harajuku Style instantly makes one think of boho clothing, pastel colours and the young, beautiful people who wear them, but this vibrant area of Tokyo is a trendsetter for more than just street fashion! While traditional Japanese “street food” might make you think of Yakisoba or Takoyaki, Harajuku’s better known for cool pop-ups and trendsetters, a bit like Shoreditch or Dalston in London, and some of the offerings have gone on to become favourites around the rest of Japan! Now a practical requirement for any hot Japanese date spot, Japanese French-style crepes and waffle cups with ice cream are a famous fixture of Harajuku’s Takeshita-dori pedestrianised shopping street which has since spread throughout Japan.
Aside from trendy themed cafes, other unexpected delights include Japanese style takes on other “Western” food, including hot dogs with toppings like Teriyaki sauce and seaweed, plus a bevvy of fried potato products with unique toppings and flavourings. Indeed, one Japan’s major crisp manufacturers has a Harajuku branch which sells both French fries and potato chips hot from the fryer with a range of shaken toppings to suit any taste.
If you want a taste of fast food that’s a little different from the norm, you can check out a smattering of these exciting J-cuisine creations at HYPER JAPAN Christmas Market, where YO! Sushi will have several different kinds on offer!
