Joshibi University of Art and Design at the HYPER FRINGE MARKET

London has a long tradition of attracting talented artists, a tradition HYPER JAPAN 2014 is happy to continue! Our HYPER FRINGE MARKET is bursting at the seams with artistic content but here’s just one example of our exhibitors this year; Students from the Joshibi University of Art and Design, Japan’s oldest womens’ university for the arts, will be presenting and selling a selection of their works, as well as offering workshops.


The Department of Cross-Disciplinary Art and Design from Joshibi University of Art and Design are creating a mini school festival in London. About 20 students from the department have been preparing their own designed products and will sell them at their exhibition booth in HYPER JAPAN 2014. The exhibition booth “JOSHIBI-MATSURI in London” also offers you different three characteristic craft workshops by three different fields belong to the department: Field of Media, Field of Art and Design for Healing and Field of Fashion and Textiles. There will also be more features such as performance by students, mini exhibition of students’ art works and so on. They are looking forward to seeing you at their booth “JOSHIBI-MATSURI in London”.

Founded in 1900 as a school for teaching art to women, Joshibi University of Art and Design is today the oldest art university for women in Japan. Throughout its 114 years of existence, Joshibi has sent many talented women into the working world.

The Field of Media investigates a new possibility of expression with technology in the field of art and design. The Field of Art and Design for Healing quests for healing effects through art and design. The Field of Fashion and Textile studies fusion design of both the tradition and modern.

Workshop 1: Flashy Fashion Nails

A workshop in which you will create “Flashy Fashion Nails”.

Why not try your hand at creating fashion nails with a difference? Easy to make even for children, these nails which reflect the cute hand-made culture of Japan will stand out even at night. By personalizing with your own decorations, you can create your very own special design. Sparkling in the day with beads, and sparkling at night with LED lights, the changing appearance of these fashion nails can be enjoyed at any time of day.

Workshop 2: CUMOS (Cube Cosmos) Workshop in London

You can enjoy crafting the cubic kaleidoscope “CUMOS” developed by Professor Minori Yamazaki. The “CUMOS” is very easy and joyful for everybody. You can experience the pleasure of creation and the excitement of new perception. They are also selling the “CUMOS” craft kit in their booth.

Workshop 3: Tradition X Fashion

You can experience necklace and a bracelet making with the Japanese traditional interlace technique “KUMI-HIMO” in this workshop!
The “KUMI-HIMO” has been used for a decoration of a sword or for an “Obi band” of a Kimono from ancient time till today. They are trying to hand down the beautiful technique to the younger generations, proposing a new colourful and girly approach to the world of Japan’s traditional handicrafts.
