HYPER JAPAN were delighted to be the hosts of the preliminary selections for the World Cosplay Summit (WCS) at HYPER JAPAN 2012 Christmas, and we’re equally pleased to report that, though the UK did not emerge victorious in the final event, our team did an excellent job at representing British cosplay on the global stage!
Team Italy emerged as the champions of WCS 2013. Dressed as Ankoku Daishogun and Mazinkaiser from Mazinkaiser: Shitou! Ankoku Daishogun, Andrea Vesnaver and Massimo Barbera swept to a decisive victory. The pair were also received the ANA prize and the Niconico Award. Team USA and Team Thailand were awarded second and third place respectively.
Since it began in 2003, the World Cosplay Summit (WCS), which helps promote internationally popular Japanese anime and manga culture, has been renowned as being one of the most elite events in the annual cosplay calendar. A frequent sight at HYPER JAPAN events, cosplay involves dressing up as a character, usually from a game, anime, or manga. Cosplayers will often go to great time and expense to get their look just right, and there are many different events where they can demonstrate their skills, such as WCS and the European Cosplay Gathering (ECG), the preliminaries for which took place at HYPER JAPAN 2013.
This was the eleventh year of the WCS, and the second time for the UK to participate on the competition.
Having lready grabbed a lot of attention with their adorable Final Fantasy inspired cosplay, the UK team received a very warm welcome in Japan. This year’s UK WCS effort was led by Heather Lawrence and Erin Bower, who were whisked to Japan by sponsor British Airways to compete in the event finals. The WCS is actually a week-series of events leading up to the final, and Heather and Erin also took part in activities such as parades, photo shoots, press conferences and TV appearances.
If you feel like you missed out by not entering the preliminaries, then don’t worry, the HYPER JAPAN cosplay team will also be working with Play Expo, who are hosting the 2013 World Cosplay Summit (WCS) preliminaries this October! Pairs of cosplayers will be able to compete for the chance to represent the UK at the next World Cosplay Summit in 2014. To take part, you must live in the UK or have a British passport.
