Learn techniques for Sumi-e Japanese ink painting : 3 days course with KOSHU- Akemi Lucas

Akemi Lucas is a Japanese calligraphy master/artist and one of the most popular and demanded instructors at HYPER JAPAN.

Her distinct style of calligraphy builds on traditional skills, and further embodies of fusion of the ancient and the modern, the eastern and the western, and the before and the after.

Currently, she is based in the UK and predominantly working on exhibitions, demonstrations, workshops, and commissions. Her artworks were used in the 2019 Rugby World Cup and a multi-media advertising campaign for the main sponsor of the British Olympic team for the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Join this course to explore the ancient Japanese art of Sumi-e ink painting to understand and learn techniques to paint Sumi-e art.

Course Structure

Please be prepared 10 minutes before the workshop starts.

Day 1

*  調墨の仕方 : Understanding ink density
* 基本技法 (直筆と側筆の使い分け)と調墨を使った技法 : Basic brush movements (choku hitsu & Soku hitsu) and Basic ink control techniques
* 墨と紙の特徴を知る : Understanding behaviour of Sumi ink and characteristics of hanshi paper
* 筆順の基本 : Importance of stroke orders
* 構図の基本 : Understanding basic compositions

Day 2 : 応用編1 Advanced techniques 1

1日目で学んだ基本で応用してみよう – Let’s apply the basics from Day 1 and paint something small, focusing on the following techniques.

* 三墨法 : 3 layers of gradation techniques
* 外隈、内隈、先隈: Sotoguma, Uchiguma, Sakiguma techniques

Day 3 : 応用編2 Advanced techniques 2

1日目で学んだ基本で応用してみよう – Let’s apply the basics from Day 1 and paint something small, focusing on the following techniques

* かすれ : Kasure techniques (Faint and rough strokes with a dry brush)
* 水ぼかし : Mizu bokashi techniques (bleeding effect with more water applied in a brush)
* 自分の構図で簡単な作品を仕上げます : Create your own artwork with your own composition

Each session includes Q&A time

Akemi will assess your work for comments by sending your work through HYPER JAPAN after the course.

Equipment needed for the course

Please prepare this equipment by yourself before the workshop starts.

  1. 2 or 3 or more brushes (Japanese Calligraphy Brushes – 1 x thick, 1 x medium and 1 x thin brush – or any other watercolour paint brush)
  2. Ink: black calligraphy ink – if you have an ink stone and an ink stick, please make thick ink before the lesson!
  3. Paper: Calligraphy – Hanshi – paper, roughly 30 papers
  4. Five small plates
  5. Cloth (felt) : put under the paper.
  6. Paperweight (or anything heavy to put on the paper or Washi paper to fix)
  7. Water for washing brush & diluting ink ( water in a jam jar etc.)
  8. Some Kitchen towel or tissue papers or white cotton cloth
