Workshop plan

Please be prepared 10 minutes before the workshop starts.

1. Greeting & Explanation of the lesson plan
2. Warm-up exercises
3. Introduction of brush techniques – petals, stems, pistils and leaves. All with black ink.
4. (short break time)
5. Layout and ink control
6. Order of painting
7. Creating artworks in Sumi (black) first
8. (short break time)
9. Explaining how to use colours for petals and pistils.
10. Completing artworks twigs and leaves in Sumi,  pistils and petals in colours of your choice.
11. Q&A time

Akemi will assess your work for comments by sending your work through HYPER JAPAN after the workshop.

Equipment needed for the class

Please prepare this equipment by yourself before the workshop starts.

1. 2 or 3 or more brushes (Japanese Calligraphy Brushes – 1 x thick – at least 3.5cm brush length and needs to be soft, 1 x medium and 1 x thin brush – or any other watercolour paint brush)
2. Ink: black calligraphy ink ( or black watercolour ink)
3. Gansai Paint: red, white and yellow recommended – or any colour of your choice (or water colour paint)
4. Paper: Calligraphy – Hanshi – paper, roughly 30 papers ( or packing papers)
5. Five small plates for ink and ink stone if you have
6. Cloth (felt): put under the paper.
7. Paperweight (or anything heavy to put on the paper or Washi paper to fix)
8. Water for washing brush & diluting ink ( water in a jam jar etc.)
9. Some Kitchen towel or tissue papers

Koshu is the identity of Akemi Lucas as a Japanese calligraphy master.  She was born in Japan and started learning calligraphy from the age of eight. Her distinct style of calligraphy builds on traditional skills, and further embodies of fusion of the ancient and the modern, the eastern and the western, and the before and the after.

Currently, she is based in the UK as a Japanese artist, predominantly working on exhibitions, demonstrations, workshops, and commissions. Her latest calligraphy artworks were used in the 2019 Rugby World Cup and a multi-media advertising campaign for the main sponsor of the British Olympic team for the Tokyo Olympic Games.
