As we approach the beginning of a new year, many of us will be making wishes for the year ahead. There are few more creative and beautiful ways to do this than by creating a traditional Japanese ema. These are the small wooden plaques on which Shinto worshippers write their prayers or wishes. If you’ve ever visited a Shinto shrine you’ll have noticed many of them tied up all around.
As part of the Creative Studio at this year’s HYPER JAPAN Christmas Market, you’ll have the opportunity to make your very own ema, which you can use to bring yourself good fortune during 2017, or gift to a friend or relative. During this session, you will firstly decorate your wooden plaque with chiyogami – brightly-patterned Japanese paper. Next, you will get to apply your own design using sumi-e ink wash painting.
