Calligraphy workshop with Kayoko Yamagishi

Discover the art of Japanese Calligraphy
Japanese calligraphy (Shodō) turns simple brush strokes into a window to your inner world. A single stroke and a flowing line express silence filled with emotion beyond words, connecting your heart to the paper through a black-and-white collaboration.
Masterpieces of calligraphy capture the words of their time.
What word touches your heart the most? You don’t need to be “perfect” in writing!!
In the workshop, you’ll explore the roots of kanji—and open the door to experience the joy of writing them yourself, just as people of the past did to convey their deepest feelings beyond the words.
What You Will Learn
In this interactive workshop, you’ll be guided through the fundamentals of Japanese calligraphy in a structured yet creative way;
- Introduction to Shodō, its tools, and the concept of “your word, your way”
- A short lecture with “Kanji” cards, exploring ancient pictographs that evolved into modern characters.
- Brush practice to learn balance, brush pressure, and stroke order.
- Final artwork creation on high-quality calligraphy paper, expressing your chosen word in your own unique style.
What You Can Bring Home
You’ll take home your finished calligraphy artwork on postcard-size washi paper. More importantly, you’ll carry a deeper connection to the meaning of your chosen “Kanji”, and you try to express it!
