The renowned Japanese artist Aya Burbanks is back this year with immersive workshop exploring the captivating world of Japanese mask-making. With over a decade of experience hosting Japanese art workshops at HYPER JAPAN Festival, Aya is passionate about sharing the beauty and cultural significance of traditional Japanese arts.
What You Will Do
In this 50-minute special Japanese mask-making workshop, Aya will teach you techniques to draw a unique design on the mask. From selecting the perfect colours and painting your mask, you will gain hands-on experience in bringing your creative visions to life. Immerse yourself in the timeless artistry of Japanese culture. All materials will be provided.
What You Can Bring Home
At the end of the workshop, you can take home your custom-designed Japanese mask! You can enjoy the rest of the festival with your mask, add a touch of charm to your outfit and take those memories from the festival to your home. Join us for this special workshop and immerse yourself in the timeless artistry of Japanese culture.

Aya Burbanks
Artist - Sumi-e/Calligraphy & Western art
Aya grew up on the island of Sakurajima in Kagoshima Bay, Japan, which is famous for its highly active volcano & one of the most scenic places in Japan.
Surrounded by her art-loving family, she started to learn calligraphy from an early age and her love for art has never stopped growing since then.
As an artist, Aya enjoys all kinds of painting with her specialities being Sumi-e ink painting and Japanese calligraphy – and she holds master licenses in both art forms. Her favourite Japanese artists are Hokusai and Hiroshige. She has been actively involved with promotion of Japanese traditional culture in the U.K. through her calligraphy and art works & teaching. In 2022 she was commissioned to provide calligraphy for an exhibition at Stonehenge by English Heritage.
Since the very beginning of HYPER JAPAN in 2010, her Japanese art workshops have been one of the most popular workshops and she is a huge supporter and fan of HYPER JAPAN.
