Eisai (英彩)

Eisai is a Japanese calligraphy artist, based near Guildford in Surrey.

She started learning calligraphy at the age of 7 when her parents sent her to a local calligraphy school in Osaka, Japan. She learned how to write beautifully with a brush.

In her twenties she joined the Seikyu Shodo Kai (青邱書道会), a calligraphy society founded by Seikyu Yamashita, who was President of the Japanese Calligraphy Education Society. As her master, Mr Yamashita was the main influence in her development as a calligraphy artist. After 10 years in the society, she was given the professional calligraphy name, Eisai (英彩).

After moving to the UK with her family in September 2000, she took a break from calligraphy. She was busy looking after her young children and adjusting to life in the UK, but she could not stop thinking about calligraphy.

As her children grew older, she began to practise at home and think about how she could develop her calligraphy career. She started to receive some commissioned requests and take part in local events. Gradually, she built up a business and in 2018 she started teaching at the Surrey Adult Learning Centres.

Eisai have continued to develop her style by taking various online courses, including Design Calligraphy which she completed in 2021. Since then, she has worked on various design projects.

Eisai currently run workshops at schools and corporate events across the South of England. She also holds workshops and classes for both groups and individuals at home.

In her workshops, she focuses not only on teaching technique but using the process of learning Japanese calligraphy as a meditative way to discover inner peace and tranquillity. Only then can the artist produce beautiful brush strokes and master the art of Shodo (Japanese calligraphy).
