Sumi Painting Workshop with Ayumi Addison

The Japanese Arts, Calligraphy and Sumi painting are deeply rooted in the Zen philosophy, its nature, and its culture. By holding a brush and connecting yourself to a deep, meditative mind, you will step onto a journey of self-discovery through each brushstroke.

Master Ayumi will guide you through the basic techniques and will show you how to bring yourself into your deep creativity step by step. No previous experience or equipment is required, just bring yourself and enjoy the creation with Ayumi!

What You Will Learn

For the Sumi painting workshop, you will learn basic brush movements and ink control first, then a tutorial on how to paint a bamboo. Afterwards, you will practice and create your artwork.

What You Can Bring Home

After the workshop, you will bring home your artworks you have created, such as completed Sumi bamboo painting. These tangible reminders of your creative journey will keep the newfound skills and inspiration flowing long after the workshops are over!

Ayumi Addison

Ayumi is a qualified Japanese Sumi painting artist based in Chichester, West Sussex,
UK. She began her artistic journey in childhood and later graduated from Kyoto Saga
University of Arts in Japan. After moving to the UK in 1999, she continued to develop her
practice, eventually discovering Sumi painting in 2019 through workshops with Koshu
Japanese Art under the guidance of Akemi Lucas.
She became deeply moved by the beauty of Sumi painting and its ability to express
emotion and inner feelings through simple black ink on white paper.
Inspired by this tradition and its quiet depth, Ayumi undertook professional training with
Koshu Japanese Art, beginning in March 2022 and completing the course in August
2025. She then continued to complete the teacher training programme in June 2026.
During her training, she began teaching Sumi painting through workshops, sharing her
growing knowledge and passion with students.
In Ayumi’s workshop, you will learn not only techniques — such as how to control black
ink and how to move the brush with intention — but also how to slow down, focus your
mind, and be fully present in the moment. The workshop is welcoming and enjoyable.
Hope you can join Ayumi and experience the quiet beauty of Sumi painting together.
