Tsumami-zaiku is a traditional Japanese handcraft that involves folding and pinching(つまみ-tsunami) small squares of fabric to create sophisticated floral designs. Originating over 200 years ago, it is commonly used to make kanzashi hairpieces worn with kimono.   

Join us for this opportunity where you can learn the techniques of Tsumami-zaiku and experience the beauty of Japanese handcrafts.  

What You Will Learn 

Our instructor Kyoko Sakaguchi will have two workshops. One is a beginner-friendly, and the other is for those confident in working with small and delicate crafts (or with prior experience in Tsumami-zaiku)  

Beginner friendly 

Perfect for those new to Tsumami-zaiku, this workshop will cover:  

• The basics of folding and pinching fabric to create simple floral designs of Kiku (chrysanthemum).  
• Step-by-step guidance on crafting a small, elegant Tsumami-zaiku accessory.  
• An introduction to the history and cultural significance of Tsunami-zaiku.  

Intermediate (skill building)

This workshop is designed for those with prior experience in Tsumami-zaiku or individuals confident in working with small, delicate crafts. You will:  

• Learn to create intricate, multi-layered designs of a Tudor rose, a hydrangea, and a crane!  
• Explore advanced techniques for shaping, assembling, and detailing complex patterns.  
• Receive expert guidance to refine your skills and enhance the quality of your work.  

What You Can Bring Home  

At the end of the workshop, you will take home your handmade Tsumami-zaiku brooch. The type of flowers and animals you’ll be making vary depending on the day. Choose the workshop day with the design you want to create the most!
